A positive test tends to send people straight to the bathroom shelf, reading labels they've never read before. If your routine is built on Tatcha, the news is mostly good. The more useful question is which products are worth a second look and why, so you can check the next launch yourself.

The short answer

Is Tatcha pregnancy safe? For its core products, generally yes. Tatcha says it doesn't formulate with retinol, the ingredient pregnancy guidance most clearly says to avoid, and none of the six products we checked contain retinoids, hydroquinone, bakuchiol or salicylic acid. Two things are worth knowing: most Tatcha formulas contain fragrance, and its Milky Sunscreen uses chemical filters, so The Silk Sunscreen is the better pick if you want mineral-only. Check with your provider if you have a skin condition.

What Tatcha says about pregnancy

On its help center, Tatcha says its products are pregnancy-friendly because it doesn't formulate with retinols. That's a useful starting point, and it lines up with the ingredient lists we checked.

One detail to know: most Tatcha products still list parfum (fragrance), along with fragrance components such as limonene, linalool and citral. Tatcha describes some of these products as made without synthetic fragrance, but that isn't the same as fragrance-free. Fragrance isn't a pregnancy risk. It matters if your skin has become reactive or smells have started turning your stomach. Of the products below, Indigo Overnight Repair and The Silk Sunscreen are the fragrance-free ones.

Which skincare ingredients to avoid in pregnancy

The clearest one is retinoids. Oral retinoids such as isotretinoin cause birth defects. Topical retinoids, including tretinoin, adapalene, tazarotene and over-the-counter retinol, are absorbed in much smaller amounts, but they're still generally avoided in pregnancy. Hydroquinone, a skin lightener, is also usually put off until after the baby because 35% to 45% of it is absorbed through the skin.

Many of the ingredients people worry about are fine. According to MotherToBaby, ACOG suggests that over-the-counter products with benzoyl peroxide, azelaic acid, salicylic acid or glycolic acid may be used during pregnancy if needed. Our guide to pregnancy-safe skin care products covers the full list.

About "retinol alternatives"

"Retinol alternative" is a marketing label, not an ingredient, so read the list. Tatcha's Silk Serum uses peptides and plant extracts. Many other brands use bakuchiol, a plant compound that hasn't been studied in pregnancy. If you see bakuchiol on a label, ask your provider before using it.

Is Tatcha pregnancy safe? Five skincare products checked

We read the ingredient lists of the Tatcha products readers ask about most. None of these contain retinoids, hydroquinone, bakuchiol or salicylic acid.

Best for dry skin

1. TATCHA The Dewy Skin Cream

A rich, cushiony cream for skin that's gone dry, with nothing on the pregnancy avoid list. It's built on squalane, hyaluronic acid and fermented rice, with no retinoids, hydroquinone, bakuchiol or acids. Our Dewy Skin Cream review goes through the full ingredient list.

Good to know: It contains fragrance (parfum, linalool, limonene and citral). That's not a pregnancy concern, but patch-test it if your skin has become reactive. It's also heavy for oily skin.

2. TATCHA The Water Cream

A light gel-cream that hydrates without feeling heavy. It's made with fermented rice, glycerin, hyaluronic acid and Japanese botanicals, with no retinoids or exfoliating acids. A good fit if pregnancy has made your skin shinier or more breakout-prone.

Good to know: Fragrance is on the label (parfum, limonene, linalool and citral). If your skin runs dry, the Dewy Skin Cream will feel more comfortable.

Best gentle cleanser

3. TATCHA The Rice Wash

A creamy, low-foam cleanser that relies on rice powder and mild cleansers instead of acids. There's no salicylic acid or other exfoliating acid in it, so it's an easy swap if your old face wash had a strong active you've been told to pause.

Good to know: It contains fragrance. If breakouts are your main problem, a benzoyl peroxide wash will do more. Our skin care routine guide has one.

4. TATCHA The Silk Serum

Tatcha's answer to retinol, without the vitamin A. Tatcha says The Silk Serum contains no vitamin A derivatives. It uses peptides, silk proteins and plant extracts instead, so it can stay in a pregnancy routine where a retinol can't.

Good to know: It's gentler than a retinoid, so set your expectations accordingly. It also contains fragrance.

Best for sensitive skin

5. TATCHA Indigo Overnight Repair

Fragrance-free and made for irritated, reactive skin. It pairs ceramides and hyaluronic acid with Japanese indigo, with no retinoids, acids or fragrance. If pregnancy has made your skin red or easily irritated, this is the one in the range to try.

Good to know: It's a rich overnight cream, so it can feel heavy on oily skin. If you have eczema that's flaring, check with your provider about treatment rather than relying on a moisturizer.

Which Tatcha sunscreen to use while pregnant

Daily sunscreen does more for pregnancy skin than any serum, because hormones make you more likely to develop melasma, the darker patches on the cheeks and forehead. Mineral sunscreens with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide are the easy pick, since they're the only two filters the FDA proposes to call safe and effective. Our pregnancy-safe sunscreen guide explains why.

6. TATCHA The Silk Sunscreen SPF 50

A mineral sunscreen with 10% zinc oxide and no fragrance. It's light enough to wear under makeup, and zinc oxide is the filter most often recommended in pregnancy.

Good to know: Tatcha calls it sweat-resistant, but for swimming or a long day outside you'll want a water-resistant body sunscreen. Our sunscreen guide has options.

What about The Milky Sunscreen?

Tatcha's Milky Sunscreen uses chemical filters: avobenzone, homosalate and octisalate. It doesn't contain oxybenzone or octinoxate, the two filters a 2025 pregnancy review suggests avoiding, and none of its filters have been shown to be harmful. But the FDA says it needs more data on all three, so if you'd rather stay mineral-only while pregnant, choose The Silk Sunscreen.

When itching isn't a skin problem

Intense itching on the palms of your hands or soles of your feet, often worse at night and usually without a rash, can be a sign of intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy, a liver condition. No cream will help it. Call your OB or midwife, because it's diagnosed with a blood test.
