At a Glance

The Momcozy PureHug is a structured front baby carrier for babies 3 to 24 months and 7 to 45 lbs, with a padded waist belt, X-shaped back straps and a 100% cotton, OEKO-TEX certified body. It costs about $65. It carries facing in only, with no outward-facing or back-carry position. Despite the Amazon listing's "newborn to toddler", Momcozy recommends it from 3 months, so it's a second carrier for when your baby gets heavier, not a newborn carrier.

Somewhere around three months, the baby who used to curl up on your chest starts to feel like a sack of flour. You still want to carry them, and they definitely still want to be carried. Your back just needs a little help.

Description

The Momcozy PureHug is the Momcozy baby carrier most parents mean when they search for one. It's a structured front carrier for babies 3 to 24 months and 7 to 45 lbs, with a padded waist belt, padded shoulder straps that cross in an X across your back, and a 100% cotton body that's OEKO-TEX certified. At around $65, it costs about a third of what BabyBjörn's waist-belt carrier, the Harmony, sells for on Amazon.

The waist belt is the point. It moves your baby's weight off your shoulders and onto your hips, which starts to matter once your baby passes the newborn stage and gets heavier every week. The seat adjusts to three widths as your baby grows, keeping their legs in the spread-squat "M" position that's good for developing hips.

Good to know before you buy

It isn't a newborn carrier. Amazon's listing says "newborn to toddler", but Momcozy's own product page recommends the PureHug for babies from 3 months. The 7 lb weight minimum doesn't change that, so even a big newborn should wait. For the first months, a carrier made for newborns, like the BabyBjörn Mini, is the better fit, and the PureHug takes over from there.

It only faces in. Momcozy designed it for front carrying with your baby facing your chest. There's no outward-facing or back-carry position, so if your baby wants to see the world, this isn't the carrier for that.

About "IHDI-inspired". One of the listing images uses the International Hip Dysplasia Institute logo. Momcozy is one of the IHDI's industry partners, but the IHDI says plainly that it doesn't certify or test products. The M-shaped seat is good design. It isn't a certification.

Cotton also attracts lint. Momcozy suggests a lint roller to keep it looking fresh.

Why women love it

  • Padded waist belt: lumbar support that carries the weight on your hips, not your shoulders
  • X-shaped back straps: spread the load across your back
  • Grows with your baby: three seat widths for 3 to 24 months, up to 45 lbs
  • 100% cotton, OEKO-TEX certified: soft on baby's skin
  • Hip-friendly M position: knees up, legs spread, with padded leg openings
  • Budget-friendly: structured carrier support for about $65

Best for

  • Parents with a baby 3 months or older who's getting too heavy for a soft carrier
  • Anyone with back or shoulder pain from carrying, who needs a waist belt
  • Long walks, errands and travel, where you'll carry for an hour or more
  • Carrying a younger toddler up to about 2 years on your front
  • Not for newborns. Momcozy recommends it from 3 months
  • Not if you want to face out or back carry. It's front carry, facing in, only

A note from Mindy on carrying and your postpartum body

By the time your baby is three or four months old and getting heavy, you may be carrying them for hours a day, often while your core and pelvic floor are still recovering from pregnancy and birth. A carrier with a proper waist belt helps a lot, because it moves the load from your shoulders and upper back to your hips, where you're strongest.

Fit it high and snug. Your baby should sit high on your chest, close enough to kiss the top of their head, with their face visible and their chin off their chest. A carrier worn too low pulls you forward and strains your lower back. Tighten the waist belt first, then the shoulder straps.

Take breaks and build up. Start with shorter carries and add time as you get stronger. If you have back pain that doesn't settle, pelvic pain or pressure, leaking, or a gap down the middle of your belly that bulges when you sit up, mention it to your provider. A pelvic floor physical therapist can help with all of those, and none of them are things you just have to live with.

And if you're pregnant again with a little one who still wants to be carried, ask your provider before you keep using a front carrier. As your bump grows, a waist belt and your toddler's weight end up right on top of it.

FAQs

Is the Momcozy baby carrier good?

For the price, yes. The PureHug gives you a padded waist belt, X-shaped back straps and a 100% cotton body for about $65, well under the price of most carriers with a padded waist belt. Its limits are that it's for babies from 3 months, not newborns, and it only carries on your front facing in.

Can you use the Momcozy carrier with a newborn?

Momcozy recommends the PureHug for babies 3 to 24 months, even though the weight range starts at 7 lbs and the Amazon listing says "newborn to toddler". For the first three months, use a carrier designed for newborns, such as the BabyBjörn Mini, and switch to the PureHug as your baby grows.

Can a baby face forward in the Momcozy carrier?

Not in the PureHug. Momcozy designed it for front carrying with your baby facing in only. If you want an outward-facing position, you'll need a different carrier.

How long can you use the Momcozy PureHug?

From 3 months to about 24 months, or up to 45 lbs. The seat adjusts to three widths as your baby grows. It works for younger toddlers, but it isn't a dedicated toddler carrier, which usually has a wider, taller panel for children up to about 4 years.

Is the Momcozy baby carrier good for back pain?

It's a better choice than a carrier without a waist belt. The padded lumbar belt carries the weight on your hips, and the X-shaped straps spread it across your back. Fit matters as much as design: wear your baby high and snug. If back pain continues, talk to your provider or a pelvic floor physical therapist.

Is the Momcozy carrier hip healthy?

Its seat holds your baby's legs in the spread-squat "M" position that's recommended for hip development, and Momcozy is an industry partner of the International Hip Dysplasia Institute. The IHDI states that it doesn't certify or test products, so treat "IHDI-inspired" as a design claim rather than a certification.

Can I carry my toddler while pregnant?

Many people do in an uncomplicated pregnancy, but ask your provider first, especially if you have any bleeding, pain or risk of preterm labor. With a front carrier like the PureHug, the waist belt and your toddler's weight sit right on your bump as it grows, so it usually gets uncomfortable well before the end. Stop if you feel pain, pressure or contractions.

What's the difference between the Momcozy PureHug and the BabyBjörn Mini?

The BabyBjörn Mini is for newborns, from 7 lbs to about 12 months. It's soft and quick to put on but has no waist belt. The PureHug starts at 3 months and goes to 24 months, with a padded waist belt for heavier babies, but it only faces in. Many parents use the Mini first and the PureHug after.
