A note on the reclining position

This bassinet has an adjustable tilt, and you will see it marketed elsewhere as an anti-reflux feature. Worth knowing before you use it that way: the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends infants sleep on a firm, flat surface, and there is no good evidence that inclined sleep improves reflux. Some evidence suggests a semi-inclined position can make reflux worse. US safety standards for bassinets and bedside sleepers cap the sleep surface at 10 degrees or less from horizontal for this reason.

Use the flat setting for sleep. If reflux is making your baby miserable, the approach with actual evidence behind it is keeping them upright while awake after feeds, then putting them down flat, and talking to your pediatrician rather than changing the angle they sleep at.

Are bedside bassinets safe for newborns?

Bedside sleepers sold in the US must meet federal safety standards for bassinets and bedside sleepers, which cover the sleep surface angle, the mattress and the side height. Safe use is the same as any sleep space: baby on their back, on the firm flat mattress that came with it, a fitted sheet and nothing else. No bumpers, pillows, blankets or toys.

Can I use the tilt setting for reflux?

We would not. The AAP recommends a flat sleep surface, and inclined sleep has not been shown to help reflux. Keep the flat setting for sleep and raise reflux with your pediatrician.

What age can babies use a bedside bassinet?

Generally from birth until around 4 to 6 months, or until your baby starts rolling or pushing up on hands and knees, whichever happens first. At that point they move to a crib.

Does it include a mattress?

Yes, a mattress and fitted sheet are included, so it is usable out of the box. Do not add a second mattress or a topper. The mattress that ships with a bassinet is firm and sized to leave no gap at the edges, and both of those things matter.
